A new Ballot Box Cigarette Bin has been installed at the Meredith Road shopping parade. Castle Hill Councillors hope that this quirky ballot bin will encourage people to use the bin instead of throwing their cigarette ends on the floor. The bin features a question and smokers can give their opinion by voting using their cigarette butts.
Castle Hill Borough Councillor Ian Fisher says “Our residents often feedback to us that they want a litter free Ipswich. As a group, we have discussed many ideas on how to tackle this. We are interested to see if this unusual bin will help us reduce litter.”
The bin was funded out of Cllr Sam Murray’s County Council locality budget. She hopes this will be one of many and looks forward to having a bit of fun with the questions.
County and Borough Councillor for the area, Sam Murray says “I first saw these in Southend-on-Sea and they stuck with me because they are an unusual idea that may actually attract attention from people walking past. The questions will be updated monthly, so we can have some real fun with this. We may even be able to get some feedback on local issues.”
According to Keep Britain Tidy, Cigarette butts make up 66% of all littered items in England and are the most littered item. The Cllrs in Castle Hill wish to change this and make Ipswich litter free.
