Tom Hunt writes "I was very encouraged to see the new measures introduced by the Prime Minister this week in an effort to curb the unacceptable levels of migration we have seen in recent years.
"Over the last 25 years net migration has been rising at an unprecedented level and in 2022 it is estimated that it reached 745,000. This is unsustainable.
"The Prime Minister has stopped foreign master's students bringing over family members and overseas care workers bringing over family dependents. This is sensational progress and is predicted to make a huge difference – with Professor Brian Bell estimating that this could help get net migration down to 150,000 – a fantastic prospect, reaching our manifesto pledge.
"Despite this immensely positive progress we can still do more. Last summer I year I authored a report on behalf of the New Conservatives group on how we could best curb migration and cut net migration. I outlined 12 strategies on how we could do this. I am delighted to see that in the Prime Ministers new measures some of the themes of what I suggested last year have been echoed.
"All this positive progress would be put at risk by the election of a Labour government at the end of the year who are ideologically wedded to the concept of open borders."
