July is always a traditionally busy month with lots of events going on around the town. I was invited the other Sunday to open the Cliff Lane Allotment Open Day. It was an excellent event with lots of stalls selling fresh vegetables grown on the allotments and lovely jams and cakes made by a very busy band of workers. I spent a long time chatting to some of the allotment holders and was interested to hear that they are allowed to keep chickens on their allotments but I didn’t know that they were prohibited from keeping cockerels -presumably because of noise but the silly thing is you can keep a cockerel in your back garden! One allotment holder told me that if you put a cockerel in with the hens then he will fight the fox to the death to save the hens. I thought this was very interesting and perhaps we should look at changing this by-law. The most amazing thing about this event is that it raised over £1,000 for Help for Heroes that really is a wonderful achievement for such a worthy cause. Congratulations to all that took part.
