Ipswich Conservatives have elected former Borough Council leader Liz Harsant to serve as the Association Chairman.
Cllr Harsant takes over from Cllr Judy Terry, who has led the Association since 2011. She will head the officers team as they tackle the task of preparing for the 2014 European Elections and the 2015 General Election.
Commenting on her election, Cllr Harsant said:
“It is a privilege to have been elected as Association Chairman in the run up to an important set of elections for the Conservatives. We face difficult elections in May, with many councillors facing tricky fights in the mid-term of a Conservative led Government that is making the tough decisions necessary to repair the toxic economic legacy we were left by the Labour Party. We hope that our local message of protecting front line services whilst continuing to freeze council tax will contrast with Labour’s record; in Ipswich they are hiking tax bills by 2% and when they were last in charge of the County Council we all remember their 18.5% hike, which costs us over a hundred pounds every year. Going forward from May I hope that we can continue to build the voluntary network we need to ensure victory in the 2014 European Elections and the 2015 General Election.
“I will be working with my colleagues to make sure that the resources are in place for Ben Gummer MP, Cllr Chris Stewart and Cllr Mark Bee to put forward a positive message about the achievements of Conservatives in Government, including taking thousands of Ipswich voters out of income tax altogether, putting doctors in charge of the NHS, freeing schools to become academies, halting Labour’s fuel duty escalator, cutting the deficit by a quarter, cutting immigration by a third and finally tackling the burgeoning benefit bill.
“I look forward to an exciting year ahead.”
